Turmeric is a spice from South East Asia, cultivated primarily in China, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Java. Peru. Australia and the West Indies.. Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and has a tough brown skin and a deep orange flesh.
Nature's Bounty Turmeric/Curcumin, 60 Capsules (Pack of 2)Turmeric has been attributed with lowering high cholesterol, particularly LDL or bad cholesterol due to its active component, curcumin. Research reveals that curcumin can communicate with genes in liver cells to increase the production of messenger proteins that direct the creation of receptors for LDL (bad cholesterol), thus, enabling liver cells to clear more LDL (bad cholesterol) from the body.  Not only can curcumin lower bad cholesterol, it can also relax blood vessels, and lower high blood pressure naturally. Should a heart attack happen, it can help lessen damage to heart tissues and even reduce the size of hemorrhagic strokes.

Studies also show that turmeric may improve the production of enzymes that break down sugar and fat (fat metabolism) and aid in weight management.

Research is currently being conducted on the potential of turmeric for the treatment of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.  It seems that curcumin produces a chemical that clings to the amyloid plaque that covers brain cells, and dissolves it.  Buildup of amyloid plaque in the brain has been found to cause mental functions to degenerate, causing symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Turmeric is very rich in antioxidants and studies show that curcumin tends to enhance the body’s levels of glutathione in the liver that helps in detoxifying the body properly.

It is a very powerful anti-inflammatory and is a natural treatment for arthritis without the dangerous side effects that anti-inflammatory drugs provide.
In Ayurvedic practices, turmeric has many medicinal properties and many in South Asia use it as a readily available antiseptic for cuts, burns and bruises. It is also used as an antibacterial agent.
It is taken in some Asian countries as a dietary supplement, which allegedly helps with stomach problems and other ailments. It is popular as a tea in Okinawa, Japan. Pakistanis also use it as an anti-inflammatory agent, and remedy for gastrointestinal discomfort associated with irritable bowel syndrome, and other digestive disorders. In Afghanistan and northwest Pakistan, turmeric is applied to a piece of burnt cloth, and placed over a wound to cleanse and stimulate recovery. Indians, in addition to its Ayurvedic properties, use turmeric in a wide variety of skin creams that are also exported to neighboring countries. Source
