The seeds of the milk thistle (also known as silymarin) have been used as a natural health supplement and treatment for liver diseases for 2000 years. Scientific studies have suggested that silymarin, a substance in milk thistle, protects the liver from toxins which can cause damage.   Hundreds of studies, particularly in Europe, have established the ability of milk thistle to protect the liver from damage from toxins. It is often suggested as a treatment for hepatitis C, alcoholic hepatitis and alcoholic cirrhosis.
Milk thistle has been used for 2,000 years as an herbal remedy for a variety of ailments, particularly liver and gall bladder problems. Several scientific studies suggest that substances in milk thistle (especially a flavonoid called silymarin) protect the liver from toxins, including certain drugs such as acetaminophen, which can cause liver damage in high doses. Silymarin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and it may help the liver repair itself by growing new cells.  Sylimarin is believed to induce the manufacture of new and healthy liver cells without encouraging the growth of malignant liver tissues.  It is also serves as an antioxidant, giving the liver protection from free radicals which are harmful by-products of cell metabolism.
The use of milk thistle can also increase by one-third the liver’s content of glutathione.  Glutathione is a key substance in detoxifying the many potentially damaging hormones, chemicals and drugs in the body.   Milk thistle is also believed to ease the outbreaks of psoriasis, a skin disease that strikes the body when the liver fails to neutralize certain toxins that ciculate in the bloodstream.
Toxins are all around us from the food we ingest to the air that we breathe and adding milk thistle to our daily supplements may spell the difference between a healthy body and sickness.  Milk thistle natural health supplement now comes in gel capsule form and is available in most health stores.
